Is the Phrygian Hat no ifs ands or buts the Smurf Hat?

Is the Phrygian Hat no ifs ands or buts the Smurf Hat?

The Phrygian hat is known to be a emblem of liberty. The name comes from the name of a land called Phrygia, situated near Greece. The emblem of the French Revolution, the Marianne, is always pictured as a gorgeous woman wearing a Phrygian hat.

Briefly it is a tight-fitting cap with a pointed top which angled to the front. The hats were sometimes made of stiffened fabric or leather, which made them sit up on the head like helmets, with the pointed top curving towards the front of the head. Other Phrygian caps were made of soft felt, with the point whether flattened onto the crown of the cap, hung to the side, or stood up softly.

The history of these extra hats goes back to antique times. In Antiquity, the Phrygian hat gathered two connotations: for the Greeks as showing a distinctive Eastern affect of non-Greek "barbarism" and among the Romans it was a badge of liberty. The cap of freedmen served as a emblem of freedom from tyranny in late Republican Rome. Even some of the soldiers in Antiquity -such as Dacian ones - are painted or carved in stone wearing these Phrygian type helmets.

All that matters about these hats is that they used to symbolize freedom in separate ages of human kind. Now if we take a quick look at one of these Phrygian hats, leaving history aside, what does it remind you of? Maybe the hat of Snow White's friends, the seven dwarfs; or even better, those of the beloved and funny creatures, with minuscule houses in mushrooms - the Smurfs.

Nowadays this hat brought freedom to other level of expression. Because it became more and more difficult to be yourself, the revolution must come from within you. When going out with your friends, you don't have to prove anything to anything and then you can be yourself. This funny minuscule hat can make you laugh, can make you relax and enjoy going out.
